“Checkers Great Escape” is a third person action platforming game. You play as Checkers the rat, a lab rat whose only goal is to escape from a crazy lab. The art style is based off of cartoons such as “Dexter’s Lab” and “Pinky and the Brain, and video games such as “Epic Mickey,” “Ratchet and Clank,” and “Hello Neighbor.”
As you find ways to escape the lab, you can get power ups to help you progress. The three power ups that the player can acquire are the flatten ability, the flying ability, and the strength ability. The more abilities the player gets, the more of the lab that can be explored.
I worked as tech lead on the team, where I was responsible for scripting the game mechanics, hazards, AI, etc., as well as creating the executables for deadlines. I managed our sound designers, meeting with them, giving them tasks, and assuring that tasks were finished by the deadlines. We used the Agile methodology to develop and complete the project. Since we were a small team, I also helped with other art and design tasks.
The game was made in Unreal Engine 4. For more information, please visit the Checkers Great Escape website.
